Can I really wear clogs? And how do I do it?

Yes you can. You can really wear clogs. Worn correctly clogs are comfortable, stylish anc chic.

After their come-back début on the runways of Chanel this Spring, clogs have quickly become the hottest shoe ever…again!

They’ve found their way into the hearts and onto the feet of fashion savvy celebrities like Rachel Bilson and Mary-Kate Olsen.  And have been embraced by models like Alexa Chung.

And clogs can be easily adapted into your shoe wardrobe too. Believe it or not, clogs are a ‘real-life’ women-friendly trend. You just have to be sure to choose a pair that are modern in style and comfortable to wear.

So how do you do it? How do you wear clogs?

Well it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1.   Choose well – Make sure you choose a pair of clogs with the right heel height for you and your lifestyle. You must be able to walk in them comfortably.
You also want to be sure that the upper design of the clogs works well with your wardrobe and holds your foot securely; meaning you can walk without them falling off…Those of you who wore Dr. Scholls in the 70’s know exactly what I’m talking about!

As for the material of the uppers, leather is the best option. Try to avoid extravagant clogs that have too many embellishments. They can be less versatile and rather hard to accessorize. For a playful and youthful look, choose clogs in bright colours and/or patterns. For a  more sophisticated, retro 70’s earthy look choose them in neutral colours like beige, black, gray or chocolate-brown.

When it comes to embellishments on clogs less is often better!

2.   Wear well – Start by wearing clogs with an outfit that’s easy to style – jeans are easy. Choose either skinny, flare or boyfriend style. With the latter choice try rolling up the legs for a more trendy look.

The 70’s style flare and wide leg jeans, also making their comebacks this fall, are easy styles to wear clogs with too. Clogs always peek out so perfectly from under jeans with bigger legs, creating a fresh new look for the upcoming season and giving you a break from your skinny and straight leg jeans.
While the weather’s still warm you may want to keep the top of your outfit simple and tailored by wearing a tank or T-shirt.  Then as the weather cools you can try wearing other styles of tops, like a classic washed silk blouse. Just be sure to always choose styles that suit your body shape, reflect your personal style and have a modern, trendy feel to them.

Clogs can also be worn with skirts. If your style is rocker chick, pair them with a leather skirt and a loose, white T-shirt. Or simply team a denim skirt and loose sweater together, add your clogs and your look has transformed into a beautiful casual girl look.
Wear them with dresses too. Put a cardigan over a tailored linen shirt-dress and you’re ready to go to work in clogs. If your style is boho-chic, pair your clogs with a breezy silk dress that’s abundant with flounces and lace. Add  a modern, versatile handbag and chic accessories. Or for a more urban down-town look, pair clogs with a tight-fitting dress and boyfriend blazer. Again, add an oversized bag and sunglasses and voilà you’re looking fierce!

As the temperature dips, add a pair of sock or tights to your outfits.  Most ‘real-life’ women 35+ look best in dark-colored tights. Burgundy, chocolate-brown, mustard, navy and plum are all good choices for tights that will contrast to your clothes and clogs nicely and keep you looking smart and trendy.

So there you have it! Clogs are very versatile shoes that work well with so many different styles and looks, virtually anyone can pull off clogs with just a little style-sense.

3.   Enjoy well – Like always, the final tip would be – enjoy! Always wear your clogs ferociously with confidence and a big smile!

This summer most of us only caught a glimpse of clogs and/or heard others saying, “Ew Clogs!”  But for fall trendy clogs are going to have a greater presence; they’re back and they’re hot! And worn correctly they’re oh-so comfortable, stylish and chic!

I mean think about it, if Uncle Karl loves them enough to choose them for Chanel’s Spring 2010 RTW collection, then maybe you should choose them too? Personally I don’t think you can go wrong!

So what do you think? Will you give clogs a try?

  2. Love my new clogs! Wood base, 2.5″ heel. Now that the weather is getting cooler, how do I keep them on my feet with socks or tights??

    • Hi Susan,
Be sure the fit of your clog is ‘right’ for socks…
      wear a sock that works…
may need to try a few different styles…
let us know how it goes.
Thanks for the chit chat! <3

  3. I want to wear my new Dansko clogs (brown) with footless tights (brown shade) and knee length skirt (blue with brown hues) = all very casual – how would that go over? Or would it be better to wear regular tights?

    • Hi Diane,
Approach with caution the idea of wearing clogs, footless tights and a skirt together…
remember, in order to pull clogs off and not look frumpy you must keep your style modern + trendy.
Brown clogs, with brown tights, paired with a blue + brown knee length skirt may not be the best styling route to go…
you may want to choose a different pair of shoes to pair with that skirt.

notice how the clogs, skirt and tights all “go” together but they don’t “match” –
      Hope this helps.
Thanks for the chit chat! <3
