For sure you can wear Hunter boots or wellies.
If the Queen of England can wear them – you can too!

There are many brands of wellies out there now. But Hunter boots are by far the best sellers, my personal favourite and of course the Queens personal favourite too.
Hunter Original Tall Wellington boot
The word wellies or wellingtons refers to a style of boot that was made popular by Arthur Wellesley the 1st Duke of Wellington (hence the name) and became highly fashionable among the British aristocracy in the early 19th century.
So before you buy a pair of Hunter wellington boots or wellies you will want to consider these things:
- what style and colour of Hunter boot suits my personal style and needs?
- what style of Hunter boot flatters my body shape, leg shape and height?
Ashley Olsen’s personal style choice, a pair of ‘Tall’ wellington style Hunter boots in signature Jimmy Choo crocodile print with gold buckle hardwareSo like Ashley, you too must decide whether you want a short or tall pair of Hunter wellingtons and in what colour.
The Hunter Original Tall style is a good choice for ‘real-life’ women who are taller with thinner calves.
The Hunter Huntress are similar in style to the Hunter Original Tall but have extra calf room.
The Hunter Original Short styles (with or without laces) are a good choice for all ‘real-life’ women, as they’re easy to fit and easy to wear.
You also must make sure your Hunters fit properly for how you’re going to wear them.
No matter the season or weather, Hunter boots are always in style.

what’s your thought on the hunter champary style?
Hey Lauren,
Style is a personal thing…
and what appeals to some may not appeal to others.
Hunters appeal to me for their classic + casual ‘riding-esque’ appearance…
love that style and look…
so would never choose the champary style…
plus not a big fan of the wedge on a rain boot…
What are your thoughts?
Thanks for the chit chat!

Hi, I have a question about wide calves. I have wide calves and would like to know what brand of rain boots look good on wide calves without making me look like I have elephant legs?
Thanks!
Hi JC,
Different brands carry different styles…
so it is important that first you choose a “style” that best suits your body + leg shape…
then choose a “brand” that carries that style…
personal recommendation would be a shorter style in a non-shiny (not glossy) dark colour.
Thanks for the chit chat!

PS Once you’ve made your purchase; do share…
would love to hear what you get
Hey, JC. I too have wide calves, and I agree with FA: shorter boots are best. They leave room so that it doesn’t feel as if the boot shafts are glued to your calves. I personally own a pair of teal Tretorn Skerry, so don’t be afraid to try a bold color! Because of the shorter shaft length, I can wear all sorts of bottoms comfortably — pants, jeans, tights, literally anything!

I notice Hunters worn in the summer as a fashion assessory, on women, do any men wear these just as a fashion assessory, would it look right. I have found the adjustable hunters very good, they are not so tight in the leg, they are really comfortable, I have had my green pair for 23 years, they were £29 in 1989, best £29 i have spent.
Hey Geoff,
I’m not a stylist for men so can’t answer your question with the utmost authority…
but do think it’s doable…
and would wager to say that it could even become an up-and-coming trend
although more likely for fall/winter/spring than summer.
But for now, here is a link to The Sartorialist…
the 77 comments may shed some light on your question.

I so need a pair of Hunter Tall Boots in my life this winter!!!
Btw great blog
Hi! I am quite short (4 ft. 11) and am not petit around 125 lbs. Which type of Hunter boot would you recommend?
Also, I really like the look of the taller boots, which was why I was wondering if there was a taller boot I could wear and it still be comfortable.
Sally,
If you like the look of a taller boot…
but a Hunter is too tall (approx. height 16″)…
then you may want to consider another brand.
L.L. Bean Wellie (approx. height 12″)…
may be an option to consider…
but limited in colour selection.

Hi Sally,
If you are 4’11″ then you are Petite…
when used correctly the word Petite does not define your body shape (weight), it defines your height…
typically if you’re 5’3″ or under then you are Petite.
When buying boots, you have to buy what best suits your body + leg shape and needs…
in order to best determine this…
you’ll have to try them on…
but a short height boot may be more flattering, visually proportionate + comfortable.
Thanks for the chit chat!
